Sharing your favorites online

In this section:

What is favorite sharing?

Sharing your favorite web pages (also known as social bookmarking) lets you keep your list of favorites on a web site. Other people can look at your lists and learn from them, and you can, in turn, learn from people whose lists you find interesting.

Online favorites are good for:

  • Keeping an online list of your favorite links that you can access from any computer on the Web.
  • Sharing your interests with your family, friends, and people in general.
  • Discovering what other people find interesting by looking at other people's public lists of favorites.

Getting an online favorite account

Flock currently supports two favorites sharing services: del.icio.us and ma.gnolia. Both make it easy to share your favorites.

To get yourself an account with one of these services, click one of the links below.

A complete list of the web sites that Flock works with is available on our website.

Adding a page to your online favorites

Whether or not a page is saved locally, online, or both is determined on the Favorites Properties page. To access the page, click the star when visiting the page in question. If the page is already one of your favorites, the Favorites Properties dialog will pop up. If you are marking this as a favorite for the first time, click it again to see the Favorites Properties dialog. If you've already configured an account with an online favorite service you will have the option to save a favorite online. If you do not see this option, then you will need to configure flock to recognize your favorite sharing account.

You can force flock to always add a page to your online favorites by selecting the Publish to the above locations by default option.

Setting up Flock to work with online favorites

Once you have an online favorites account, you need to tell Flock where to find it. There are two ways to do this.

  • Click the Star button on a page that is already a favorite.
  • Specify your account through the Accounts and Services menu.

To add account information by clicking the Star button

By now you've probably already tried clicking the Star button. When you first add a page to your favorites, Flock will ask if you want to share the link online. If you don't already have an account with a sharing service, Flock will ask if you would like to set one up. Follow these steps to set up your online favorites account:

  1. Find a favorite web page and click the Star.
  2. A dialog appears asking if you want to store your favorites online. Click Yes.
  3. Follow the steps in the dialogs to specify which service you use, and provide your user name and password for your service.

From now on, when you star a page, it will be added both to your local favorites (on your own computer) and to your online list.

To add account information using the Accounts and Services window

Another way to set up an online favorites services is through Accounts and Services.

  1. Open the Accounts and Services side bar.
How you access the window depends upon your operating system.
    • If you are using Windows, choose Accounts and Services from the Tools menu.
    • If you are using Linux, choose Accounts and Services from the Edit menu.
    • If you are using Mac OS, choose Accounts and Services from the Flock menu.
  2. Click the Online Favorites tab.
  3. Choose your online favorites service, or choose to only store your favorites locally. Flock will open that web site in a new tab.
  4. Create a new account, or sign into your existing account. Flock will detect your account information when you log in and will add this information to the accounts and services side bar.
  5. Close the Accounts and Services side bar.
