2.2 Use Enhanced Search Tools and Favorites Organizing

Flock includes built-in enhancements for helping you find what you're looking for and keep track of your favorite websites. And if you like to use online favorite-sharing websites as well, then Flock's integrated tools are for you!

In this section:

Save Favorites with One Click

  1. Visit a website and click the Star icon on the Navigation Toolbar to instantly bookmark that website on your favorites list.
  2. Click on the Star icon a second time while you're visiting a favorite web page to edit the name, description or tags (keywords) associated with this favorite. Tags can be used later to help you find or organize sites with similar characteristics or in similar groupings (see below).
  3. Enter details about your favorite web pages.
  4. Click on the arrows beside the Local field to select a particular folder to put your new favorite into.

Manage Favorites

  1. Click on the Favorite Sites multi-star icon on the Flock Toolbar to open the Favorite Sites Sidebar, or select View > Sidebar > Favorites from the menu.
  2. You'll see all your favorites listed under Local Favorites.
  3. Click on folders to open and close them.
  4. Re-order your favorites by dragging and dropping the names into different locations or folders.
  5. Right-click over a name to access other common management options from a drop-down menu.
  6. Select New Folder to create a New Folder, Delete to remove the favorite, and Properties to edit the favorite's details.
  7. For more flexible viewing and editing of your entire favorites list, select Favorites > Favorites Manager from the menu.

  9. Double-click on folders in the Favorites Manager to open them.
  10. Click on specific columns to view your favorites ordered by those headings, or select an order from the View menu.
  11. Select Sort by Tags, for example, to instantly group all the favorites you've tagged with "music".
  12. Click on the Column Selector to select which columns to view from a drop-down menu.

  14. Click on column headings to toggle ascending and descending order in the column.
  15. Drag and drop column headings to change the left-to-right order in which the columns appear.
  16. Drag and drop names into new positions, either re-ordering them within folders, or adding them to new folders.
  17. Click buttons on the toolbar to activate a variety of other editing and management options.
  18. Click on any favorite and press the Delete Key on your keyboard to remove the favorite.

Quick-Search Your Favorites, History and the Web

  1. Click in the Flock Search Widget, which is located to the right of the Location Bar.

  3. Enter your search terms. For example, if you wanted to find information about Dachsunds, enter "Dachsund". If you recently viewed pages or have favorites with the word "Dachsund" these are shown in a popup list as you type.

  5. The top-rated search results from Yahoo Search will also appear in this drop-down list. Click on the page that you want to go to, or press Enter to see a full display in your browser of all the search results for "Dachsund"..

Change How Searches are Done

  1. Click the arrow at the right side of the Flock Search Widget and choose Search Preferences. Alternatively, select Tools > Options from the menu and click the Searching tab.
  2. Click the arrow to the right of Default Search Engine, and select your preferred search engine from the drop-down list.
  3. Click on the Download More Now link to visit a website which can quickly install many other search engines into Flock.
  4. Check or uncheck options under Live Results and Include in Search Elsewhere to customize how the Flock Search Widget performs searches.
  5. Click OK.
  6. To change the default search engine on the My World page main Search Tool, click the arrow on the left side of the tool and choose from the drop-down list.
  7. Anytime you visit a website with a search engine which can be added to Flock, the search engine icon in the Location Bar will turn orange.

Set Up an Online Favorites Account

  1. Log into your account at a Flock-supported service which allows you to save favorites online. If you don't have an online favorites account but would like one, we recommend the following services:
  2. Upon log-in, Flock automatically downloads and adds your online favorites into the Online Favorites section of the Favorites Sidebar.
  3. Click on the name of an online favorite in the Favorites Sidebar to visit the website, just like any other favorite.
  4. You can open or close the Favorites Sidebar at any time by clicking the multi-star icon on the Flock Toolbar. (In Windows, pressing CTRL+SHIFT+F is also a toggle for the Favorites Sidebar.).
  5. You can also access your online favorites by selecting Favorites > Online Favorites from the menu.
  6. That's it! Read on to find out how Flock can help you publish and manage your online favorites.

Publish Favorites Online

  1. Click the Star icon on the Navigation Toolbar to make a new web page a favorite, or select Favorite > Favorite This Page from the menu.
  2. Click the Star icon again, or select Favorite > Favorite This Page from the menu again to open the Properties dialog.
  3. Check the box below Online to publish this favorite in your online favorites account.
    Note: You must have already set up an online favorites account in Flock (see above).
  4. Uncheck the box below Local if you do not want to also include it in your Local Favorites list.
  5. Check Private if you wish to prevent the online favorite from being publicly viewable, and your online favorites service supports this option.
  6. Check Publish to the above locations by default option if you want Flock to always add new favorites to your online favorites account without asking you.
  7. Check Show this dialog when adding favorite web pages if you prefer Flock to open this dialog immediately every time you create a new favorite.
  8. Click OK.
  9. That's it! The new favorite will instantly appear in your Online Favorites, and on your Del.icio.us or Ma.gnolia web page.
