What are time consumers?
Web pages often contain images or small programs that take time to load or run and may attempt to install software on your computer or force you to look at popup ads. You can control or eliminate these time consumers using the settings in the the Preferences window.
All of the options discussed on this page refer to settings available through the Content tab of the Preferences window.
To access the Content tab
- Open the Options or Preferences window.
How you access the window depends upon your operating system.- If you are using Windows, open the Tools menu and choose Options.
- If you are using Linux, open the Edit menu and choose Preferences.
- If you are using Mac OS, open the Flock menu and choose Preferences.
- Click the Content tab.
Blocking popup windows
Flock automatically blocks annoying popup windows on web sites. Normally, you want to make sure Block Popup Windows is checked. If you remove the checkmark, you disable popup blocking, and you'll see all popup windows.
Some web sites make legitimate use of popup windows. To allow these sites to open popups, you can add them to a list of allowed sites.
To add a site to your list of allowed sites
- Click Exceptions.
- In the Exceptions box, enter the web site's address.
- Click Allow.
- To remove a web site from the list of allowed sites, highlight it and click Remove Site.
- To clear the list completely, click Remove All Sites.
- When you are done, click the close box.
Blocking images
Flock normally allows web pages to display images. Since images take time to load, you may want to change this setting. To disable images completely, uncheck "Load images".
You may want to always block or always allow images from specific web sites. You can do this by adding the website to your list of exceptions for your image blocking rule.
To add a site to your list of exceptions
- Click Exceptions.
- In the Exceptions box, enter the web site's address.
- Choose whether you want to Block or Allow images from that site.
- To remove a web site from the list of excepted sites, highlight it and click Remove Site.
- To clear the list completely, click Remove All Sites.
- When you are done, click the close box.
Enabling or disabling Javascript
JavaScript is used to make web pages interactive, and is especially important for online forms and buttons. You can block the use of JavaScript within Flock by clearing the Enable JavaScript checkbox.
You should be cautious when setting this option; many sites require JavaScript to be enabled in order to function properly. You may find it easier to block specific JavaScript features that you find bothersome rather than disabling JavaScript entirely. To allow or block specific JavaScript functions, click the Advanced button. Then check or uncheck the specific features to block.
- Move or resize existing window Uncheck to disable moving and resizing windows.
- Raise or lower windows Uncheck to disable raising or lowering windows.
- Disable or replace context menus Uncheck to prevent web pages from disabling or changing the Flock context menu.
- Hide the status bar Uncheck to force the status bar to appear in popup windows.
- Change status bar text Uncheck to disable annoying status bar text scrolling and web address hiding.
Enabling or disabling Java
Web sites may use Java programs, called "applets," to provide advanced functionality such as animation, interactive features, timers, and so forth. By default, Flock allows Java applications to run in your browser. Flock allows Java applets to run. To prevent Java applets from running, uncheck Enable Java.
