What is a News Feed?
A news feed is an alternative way of viewing a web page. Pages that change frequently - such as news sites, or blogs - often offer news feed views. A news feed presents the titles of new and recent articles in a list, showing a line or two of each article's content so you can see what the article is about. A link to the full article is included. Your browser updates the news feed articles every hour.
The acronym RSS is used interchangeably with news feed. RSS is a technology that allows you to subscribe to websites to get regular updates. Flock helps you subscribe to and read your news feeds.
To find pages with news feeds, look for the orange icon (it's next to the Star in the location bar):
My News and the Front Page
Click the Feeds button or choose Feeds from the Tools menu to display your collection of news feeds and to view your Front Page.
The feeds panel displays a list of the news feeds that you have subscribed to. Click the Add Feed button to add a news feed to your My News list.
News feeds in your My News list can be categorized by Collections. Flock includes some default collections that we thought you might find interesting. Since a news feed constantly updates its articles, your browser also displays a Saved Articles collection that allows you to store particular articles from a news feeds for later.
Click the Add Collection button to define and add a new collection to your My News list.
Your browser updates your news feeds every hour. You can view feeds through the My World page, or through the feed side bar. You can view news feeds by source, date, or topic. You can view headlines only, view all feeds or only those from a particular source.
- Click Save to place a news feed article into your Saved Articles collection.
- Click Blog to publish a news feed article to your blog account.
Finding and Subscribing to News Feeds
Flock puts an icon in the location bar when a site offers one or more news feeds. You can click that icon to get a news feed view of the page.
To view an example news feed:
- Type http://feeds.flock.com/ into the location bar.
- Click the orange news feed button in the URL bar to display all available news feeds for this page.
- Select Flock blog to display the news feed in your browser.
- Your browser also displays the Feeds sidebar, displaying your list of subscribed news feed and saved articles.
- Click the Subscribe button to add the news feed to your Feeds list.
News feed Settings
Click the News Preferences icon to configure your browser's news feed settings.
To configure news settings
- Open the Options or Preferences window.
How you access the window depends upon your operating system.- If you are using Windows, open the Tools menu and choose Options.
- If you are using Linux, open the Edit menu and choose Preferences.
- If you are using Mac OS, open the Flock menu and choose Preferences.
- Select the Feeds tab.
- Update your settings.
