Exploring the web

In this section

This section describes how navigate to different web sites using Flock.

Starting Flock for the first time

The first time you start Flock, you will see the My World start page. If you like, you can change to a different startup page. But you may want to become familiar with Flock first.

Navigating to sites with the Location Bar

You can move to a new web site by entering its Internet address (URL) into the location bar. URLs normally begin with "http://" followed by one or more names that identify the address. One example is "http://www.flock.com/".

The Location Bar

To enter a URL into the location bar

  1. Delete the current contents of the location bar.
You can delete the current URL by highlighting the URL that is in the location bar and pressing the Delete key.
  2. Type the URL of the page you want to visit.
  3. Press the Enter (or Return) key on your keyboard.
Tip: To quickly select the URL in the location bar, press Ctrl+L (Cmd+L on a Mac).

If you don't know the URL of the site that you want to visit, type a name or subject into the Location bar that describes the page and press Enter (Return). Flock shows you the page that most closely matches (in Flock's opinion).

Want to know what those little pictures are, and why the location bar has a little black triangle at the right end? See: "More on the location bar."

Clicking a link

The most common way to move to a new web page is to follow a link from one site to another. Most web pages contain links to other pages. Links will often be styled as blue, underlined text, but buttons and pictures can also be links.

To follow a link

  1. Move the mouse pointer over the text of the link until it changes to a pointing finger.
This happens whenever the cursor is over a link.
  2. Click the link once.
While Flock locates the page, status messages will appear at the bottom of the window.

Visiting a page again

There are several ways to revisit pages.

  • To see a list of URLs you've typed into the location bar, click the arrow at the right end of the location bar. Click the page you want to go to that page.
  • To go back or forward one page, click the back or forward arrow in the Navigation Toolbar.
    Back and Forward Buttons
  • To see a list of tabs that you've recently closed, open the History menu and choose Recently Close Tabs.
  • To see a list of pages you've visited during the current session, open the History menu and choose the page you want.
  • To see a list of pages you've visited since you last opened Flock, right-click (Ctrl-click) the back or forward arrow. If your mouse doesn't have a right button, click and hold on the arrow. A list of pages you recently visited appears. Chose the page you want.

Stopping and Reloading

The Stop and Reload button is to the right of the back and forward arrows. Usually the button has a picture of two wavy arrows on it, and clicking the button will reload the current page. While a page is being loaded, the button has an X on it, and clicking the button will stop the page from being loaded. (Handy if it's taking too long or you've just changed your mind.)
