Favorites

In this section:

The Star is for favorites

You've probably noticed the beautiful Star button to the left of the location bar. As you browse and search the Web, you'll find pages you'd like to return to later, and pages you use every day like your favorite news service or financial page. By clicking the Star button, you tell Flock to remember their addresses so they're always just a click away.

To create a favorite, click the Star button.

To return to a favorite page, open the Favorites menu and choose Manage Your Favorites. The Favorites Manager opens. Double-click a favorite to visit the page.

That's the simplest way to use the Star button -- just click the Star once, and move on.

Adding details to your favorites

If you're the kind of person who likes to organize, classify, sort, and so forth, then you'll want to check out the Favorites Properties dialog. Click the Star to add a page to your favorites; click the Star again to bring up a window that allows you to enter additional information about your favorites.

Enter details about your favorite web pages.

Name and Description

By default, the favorite's name is the name given to it by the page's author. You may want to give it a different name that's shorter, more descriptive, or easier for you to remember. You can also write a longer description for the favorite. Type whatever you want in the Name and Description fields.

Tags

Tags let you assign categories to your favorites, so you can easily find all web pages that deal with, for instance, the personalities of dachshunds. Tags are different than folders. A favorite page can only be in one folder, but it can have many tags.

To create a tag for a favorite, type into the Tag area. Use commas to separate the tags. If the tag is a phrase instead of a single word, enclose it in quotation marks.

Your tags are added to your local favorites, and to your online favorites if you have them.

Local

The checkboxes in the "Local" let you add favorites to a folder. You can use folders to gather a set of favorites that you want to display in your toolbar, to categorize favorites using a system that's separate from your tags, or just to satisfy your compulsive sense of organization.

Flock comes with some favorites and folders by default. These are pages that we thought you would find interesting. You can create your own folders of favorites to better organize the sites you like.

To create a new folder:

  1. Click the Star next to the location bar.
  2. Once the star turns orange, click the Star again.
    The Favorites Properties window opens.
  3. In the Local box, expand the arrow to the right of the folders drop down. Click New Folder to create a new folder.
  4. Type a name for your collection, and click OK.
  5. Now you can add favorites to this new collection.

Publishing Favorites Online

If you use an online favorites service such as del.icio.us or ma.gnolia, select the service that you use from the Favorites Properties window. If your service supports private online favorites, you can choose from the menu whether or not you want to share this favorite with everyone, or keep it private ("with my other computers"). If you haven't set up an online favorites service with Flock, then putting a check-mark next to "Share this favorite" makes Flock think you want to set one up.
