Flock Announces Powerful New Advances for Twitter and Facebook Users in its Latest Browser

The Easiest Way To Share And Stay In Touch With the People and Information You Care About Online

Redwood City, Calif.--May 19, 2009—Flock, the social web browser, today announced the availability of Flock 2.5. This new, free version of the popular browser gives active social users the fastest and easiest way to roam the web, keep in touch with the people and information they care about, and share their favorite content with their friends via the single application used by everyone online, the browser. Flock lets users keep their finger on the pulse of their social networks, yet gives them unprecedented freedom to explore online without having to click back and forth between social networks, websites, tabs, applications and content. And now, Flock is the only browser that allows users to take Facebook Chat with them wherever they go on the Internet.

“Users are interested in the most immediate news and content from their friends and trusted sources,” said Shawn Hardin, CEO of Flock. “While everyone is excited about the explosive growth of Twitter and Facebook, people are having a hard time staying on top of the volume and pace of information and alerts generated by these services. Flock brings everything you care about together in one place, and seamlessly integrates all of your favorite activities into the browser. The end result is that Flock makes the social web experience easy, fun and more fulfilling.”

Flock 2.5 makes both sharing and discovering content fast and easy. To share content, you simply drag and drop URLs, photos, videos, text or other content you find on the web to a friend’s Twitter, Facebook, MySpace or other profile in Flock’s People Sidebar, and it is instantly shared. Flock now also comes with Twitter Search that allows you to save all of your Twitter searches and keep them in one place, making the discovery of content automatic and straightforward.

The new FlockCast capability allows you to ‘broadcast’ your public actions to multiple locations at once, eliminating duplicate effort. Flock makes posting and promoting your own blogs into Facebook effortless; drag and drop content you find anywhere on the Web into your favorite blog and Flock posts it to your Facebook newsfeed. You can also automatically post your Tweets, status updates from MySpace, Bebo and other networks, along with blog posts and photo uploads to Facebook. And when you share a URL in a Twitter message, Flock automatically shortens the URL—eliminating the need to shorten the URL with yet another site. It’s all automatic with Flock.

Flock’s Twitter integration allows you to take full advantage of the browser to easily share content found on the web with your audience on Twitter. You can re-tweet and manage a variety of actions easily from within Flock’s People Sidebar. Flock also helps you manage many conversations by separating your @replies/mentions and direct messages into separate areas within the Flock Sidebar.

The latest release of Flock includes Facebook Chat for instant messaging with friends. Facebook Chat lets you see when other people are on online and makes sharing your discoveries with them easy, so you can remain connected while you travel across the Web. You can also drag and drop photos, videos, links and text into your chats, making your web experience simple, social and fun. (Editor’s Note: Videos of the new Flock 2.5 can be found at http://www.flock.com/tour/new.php)

Flock keeps everything in one place--your favorite people, sites, feeds, media, saved searches and activities--and offers a cure for information overload and social fatigue. Flock helps its users cut through the online clutter, without losing touch or missing out.

As social media explodes, so has Flock activity. There have been over 80,000,000 log-ins to services via Flock since the release of Flock 1.0. Flock users have a lot of friends, and they load those friends over 500,000,000 times into Flock’s People Sidebar each month. Eighty-nine percent of Flock users recommend it to their friends and Flock has sustained over a ninety percent user satisfaction rate. Flock is designed to serve the socially active user that wants to stay connected to various services and keep abreast of the latest information and activity in their lives. And Flock’s international reach is continuing to grow. The company is also announcing that Flock is now compatible with Bebo, the popular international social network. Bebo’s 22 million unique visitors can now enjoy the benefits of Flock and share content across all of their social networks. Bebo friends now appear instantly in the Flock People Sidebar along with your Facebook, MySpace and Twitter friends. With Bebo integration, Flock is now used in over 14,000 cities and over 192 countries and territories.

MySpace, Flock and Vidoop Collaborate to Develop OpenID Identity in the Browser

Prototype to Allow Users to Log-in Seamlessly Across OpenID Compliant Sites

Redwood City, CA—December 2, 2008—MySpace, Flock and Vidoop today announced that they have developed OpenID for Flock, an implementation of the broader Identity in Browser (IDIB) open source project. OpenID for Flock offers the most comprehensive discovery and management capabilities for OpenID currently available. Internet users can now not only store their existing identity credentials within their browser, but also reap the benefits of better discovery when OpenIDs are made available by the sites they are visiting. OpenID for Flock is now available to all Flock 2.0 users as an alpha extension available for download at https://extensions.flock.com/extensions and http://vidoop.com/labs/.

With OpenID for Flock, the process of discovering, configuring and using OpenIDs that allow the user to log onto website accounts and manage their identity is streamlined. Once a relationship is established between OpenIDs and the sites that can rely on them for authentication, an easy, seamless experience is created for users that frequently travel to multiple destinations across the Internet.

"We are three companies dedicated to helping people better share their content and experiences online, and we saw an opportunity to collaborate to quickly create a way for users to more easily manage their online identity," said Max Engel, product lead for the MySpace Data Availability Platform. "Our goal was to eliminate some of the work involved in jumping between social experiences on the Web. The extension we jointly developed will give the community an easier way to seamlessly carry their identity and preferences in their browser."

MySpace, Flock and Vidoop jointly developed OpenID for Flock because the browser is the common application used by everyone to make the connection between both OpenID providers and sites that support login using the OpenID standard. Vidoop was the catalyst behind the original Identity In Browser (IDIB) project. The collaboration started in October 2008 when Vidoop Labs produced a fledgling prototype of IDIB, shared the code with the community, and blogged about the need for online identity to be solved at the browser level. MySpace became involved because of their commitment to OpenID via the company’s Data Availability Platform and Flock contributed their browser expertise based on their commitment to OpenID and furthering usability.

While other OpenID browser extensions exist, they do not provide the OpenID discovery capabilities and management features that OpenID for Flock provides. For example, OpenID for Flock senses when a user lands on a site that has provided them with an OpenID, allows configuration, management and usage tracking of all OpenIDs the user has collected, and provides a visual alert when a stored OpenID can be used to log onto a site. Users can choose which of their OpenIDs they wish to log in for each site and view the login history for each OpenID-to-site relationship they have created. With this technology, users may now more easily traverse the web, experience many more sites and leverage more connections using only one credential for each site.

OpenID is an open, decentralized, free framework for user-centric digital identity. IDIB is an emerging follow-on project that is focused on determining how OpenID in the browser will help OpenID gain overall adoption, and realize the better security and ubiquity that OpenID can provide. The MySpace, Flock and Vidoop implementation is a reference design released as open source under GPL, and as such, modifications by developers will be brought together and shared with the wider open source developer community. Details on the IDIB project and OpenID for Flock are available at the project’s Google group page located at http://code.google.com/p/idib/.

Flock 2.0 Is First Browser To Provide Automatic Image And Video Feeds to 400 Mill Social Application Users

MySpace Members Can Now Instantly Discover and Share Their Relationships and Content Throughout the Web

Redwood City, California – October 15, 2008 – Flock, the social web browser, today announced the delivery of a new version of the Flock browser. Flock 2.0 is the first browser to allow 400 million social application users to automatically receive image and video feeds. The company also announced integration with the MySpace Data Availability platform, which empowers users to take their social experiences across the web into other social networking, media sharing, web mail, news, and blog sites.

Flock allows its users to easily discover and share information and communications from applications such as Twitter, Digg, Gmail, YouTube – and now for the first time, MySpace. Flock does this by automatically delivering people, content, activities, and media that are relevant to its users, directly via the browser.

As the number of social media, webmail, feeds and blogs that any one person uses increases, so has the level of social application fatigue and information overload. The desire to receive up-to-the-minute information combined with the growing number of ‘always open’ applications has driven the design of Flock 2.0.

“As the browser market and the social space mature we’re seeing a natural evolution toward better options for consumers,” said Shawn Hardin, CEO of Flock. “Many users now belong to two or more social networks in addition to juggling multiple email, news feeds and numerous web-based applications. People who value keeping up with friends on the Web are migrating to Flock, because we let them cut through the clutter and focus on what’s important to them—the friends, media, information and events they care about.”

With the newly announced Media RSS capability, Flock becomes the first browser to automatically deliver image and video feeds to users even if they don’t belong to the most popular social networks. By simply clicking on the media stream icon next to Flock’s URL bar, the user can select from available streams and easily subscribe to them by ‘favoriting’ them in Flock’s Media Bar. Images from that source will automatically be downloaded into the Flock user’s MyWorld page and made accessible for easy viewing in the Media Bar. These images can then be dragged and dropped into profiles in the People Sidebar to instantly send them to friends, or they can be easily integrated into a blog post.

Flock 2.0 is the only browser that offers simple sharing and communication between MySpace and other socially driven applications. Flock 2.0:

  • Lets MySpace users introduce friends with one click via the Flock People Sidebar.

  • Lets MySpace users keep in touch with their social network friends and read what they’re doing and saying on Flock’s easy to see and track People Sidebar.
  • Makes photos and videos easily accessible in the Media Bar. This makes it faster for MySpace users to scroll through friends’ photos, while also sharing and commenting on videos, songs and images.
  • Lets them drag and drop photos, articles, videos—anything they want to share—directly onto a friend’s profile, into an email or directly into their blog. Or users can save cool things they’ve found in their Flock Web Clipboard to send later.
  • Brings all of the people, content and media feeds users care about into one place via the user’s MyWorld page. And Flock lets them easily track, update and organize feeds.
  • Lets bloggers quickly and easily drag content from multiple sources into the Flock Blog Editor, and publish on the fly from anywhere on the web.

“The MySpace integration in Flock is a great example of an application that helps users stay connected with their life on MySpace and easily share content with their friends throughout the Web,” said Max Engel, product lead for the MySpace Data Availability Platform. “Flock’s integration with the MySpace Data Availability Platform helps users take advantage of robust functionality in the browser to enrich users’ social experiences.”

Flock 2.0 incorporates the latest Firefox 3.0 enhancements around performance, security, and privacy. Flock also supports 24 of the most popular web mail, social applications and tools by bringing them one step closer to the user and integrating them directly into the browser.

Flock By The Numbers

From the time Flock began shipping in November 2007 there have been over a quarter billion social actions taken in the Flock browser. Through anonymous feature usage tracking those social actions include:

  • Over 30,000,000 log-ins across Flock’s integrated web applications.

  • 150,000,000 friends are loaded into the People Sidebar each month
  • 10,000,000 media streams have been loaded in Flock’s Media Bar
  • 6,000,000 photos and videos have been accessed in the Media Bar
  • Over 5,500,000 photos have been uploaded
  • 13,000,000 feeds have been accessed via Flock's Feeds Sidebar
  • Close to 1,000,000 blog posts have published using Flock’s blog editor

Flock also announced that over 70% of their users use Flock as their primary browser. Satisfaction rates are over 90% and over 75% of users recommend Flock to their friends. Flock users come from 165 countries and territories, including Vatican City. Flock is available in 18 languages. Approximately 50% of Flock’s users are outside of the U.S.

Flock Takes Home Two Honors at the 2008 VIATeC Technology Awards

Vancouver Island technology community recognizes the social media browser for “Newsmaker of the Year” and “Online Strategy of the Year”

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – May 19, 2008 – Flock (www.flock.com), the innovative social Web browser, today announced that it received two important distinctions as “Newsmaker of the Year” and “Online Strategy of the Year,” at the recent Vancouver Island Advanced Technology Centre (VIATeC) awards.

The Newsmaker of the Year award recognizes the company that has garnered the most significant attention in the technology sector during the past year. Additionally, judges deemed Flock as the best online strategist for its creative usability and innovative design, as well as the results the company achieved from its fundamental communication strategy.

“Flock has the enormous advantage of a rock-star technology team based in Victoria and we are honored to receive two influential VIATeC awards,” said Shawn Hardin, CEO of Flock. “These acknowledgments further recognize Flock as the most compelling innovator in the browser market in over a decade.”

The annual VIATeC awards captures the enthusiasm, energy and innovation that characterize Vancouver Island’s technology entrepreneurs and business people. It is a unique event for everyone in the community to showcase their accomplishments while building their profiles and increasing credibility within B.C.’s fastest-growing technology region.

Since January 2008, Flock’s user base has increased by more than 250 percent while its revenue has risen by more than 400 percent. Since its launch, there have been more than 3.5 million downloads of the Flock browser, and since it’s first commercial release in 2007, more than 60 percent of users have made Flock their default browser.
