Flock Blog

Hey Flockstars,

Thank you! The Flock Community Test Day we had last Wednesday was, as Borat might say, "Great Success!". Here's the rundown...

Some key participants:
Guillermo
ChrisVance
BouncySteve
Lurkin
McTones
Dukebody
jsuplido
Killeroid
Jacobandreas

Thank you, you all rock immensely (and please let me know if I left anyone out!). Thanks for making this awesome browser even better.

The Test Day ran from 11:00am to 8:00pm PST and uncovered several bugs, including:

#6699 Photobar does not open as selected after photo upload
#6701 No News notification when newly feeds are available
#6702 Flyout still shown live search results even this option is disable
#6703 Deleted feeds continue to be polled
#6704 Clicking Media Bar/News icons shifts UI icons to right to accomodate opened state
#6705 Public Information dialog: Esc key does not cancel
#6706 Additional blogs are not retrieved
#6707 Advertise the ""add a new blog"" option in the publish dialog
#6708 How do we forget a self-hosted blog account
#6709 MSN Spaces: Posting to selected category makes category name appears as number
#6710 Invite A Friend: "addresbook" text misspelling

There were also several very interesting and fruitful discussions regarding Flock features between Flockstars and Flock Developers.

Here's my analysis of the day. Feel free to weigh in on them or provide your own feedback.

What worked

• Having a number of Flock employees involved.
• Low stress, one-of-many-test-days mindset.
• All the framework set up for the day.

What didn’t work

• Signing up volunteers; in the future we can tell volunteers to watch the Flock blog for dates/times, rather than have them sign up for a volunteer list doesn't serve much use.
• IRC instructions: people find IRC confusing at first (I know I did). Some volunteers may have given up when they read that they must use IRC to participate. In the future, my IM information should be provided for more information regarding IRC setup.

On that note, everyone should feed free to contact me anytime via IM.

Lastly, for those of you who are wondering what exactly happens at a Test Day, I've provided the following (trimmed) transcript to show how bugs are found and filed via IRC. Hopefully it will convince you to join in on the next Test Day and help us take out these bugs even quicker.
Much thanks to Guillermo for being our example, he did an awesome job on Wednesday.

guillermo:
just to mention, i use cormorant from some weeks now, and i used it today with a not too old version (just from yesterday). I download TD1 version, installed it and with the old profile, flock open with empty four tabs (it has content when i close the «old» cormorant)

Jacky:
it might be because you did not close your "Old" cormorant browser properly, FF 2.0 has a feature that it remembers your session if you the browser is not shut down properly

guillermo:
i had available this feature (flock/firefox open like the last time i used it) but the problem is that flock open with the number of tabs open, but without content

Jacky:
when you go to the blank tab, what is in the url bar

Jacky:
is it "untitled"

guillermo:
Yes. The first is loading, but never ending, the others are untitled

Jacky:
has the first tab finished loading? and what is the url it was trying to load? The empty tabs are probably caused by "last time close down". close them, the nest time you start up flock they "should" disappear

patricia:
would you set the "javascritp.optioins.showInConsole" to be true at about:config, then open a console and tell me what error message you got at the console, please?

guillermo:
i had the «Show my windows and tabs from last time» in the When flock starts option. I closed Flock and reopen it and again, appear the number of tabs that i previously had open, but without content. The fistr (loading) it's trying to open http://developer.flock.com/index.php/Test_Day_Welcome_and_Notes page, the second litmus.flock.com and the third mail.google.com

guillermo:
patricia: which error do you search in the javascript console?

patricia:
when you click to any of your empty content tabs, the error should show

patricia:
would you give me that error code

guillermo:
Error: Cc[account.serviceId] has no properties
Source File: chrome:/browser/content/flock/favorites/favoritesOverlay.js
Line: 169

guillermo:
this is the error. I had nine now

erwan:
I'm going to commit the fix right now

And that's how you do it. Hope to see you all at the next Test Day!

Glad to be of help! I look forward to the next Test Day.

Hi, it was be an interesting day, like flock user and like communication researcher. I'm waiting for cormorant (the final release).

PS: Sorry for my english

Hi, I am an Spanish user of Flock, and I have to say that I like this browser so much (congratulations), but I am missing a "favorites/bookmars sidebar" like in Firefox or Opera.

I hope that in following(s) releases, We could use a "favorites/bookmarks sidebar" like I have in my installed Firefox 2.0.

Hi Javi,
This feature is already in our Cormorant. Try our latest build on http://tinderbox.flock.com/builds/trunk.

Cheers

Jacky Zhang @ Flock

When will the next testing day be held? Regularly scheduled events will contribute to the success of this excellent initiative.

Hey Lloyd,

The next test day is tentatively scheduled for April 10th. We defnitely are excited about holding these regularly, and we'll put more info up as soon as we have it.

Flock on,
