Hey Flockstars,

Last week an issue cropped up with the Google Toolbar and Flock 1.x.  The short answer is: Google Toolbar is causing Flock 1.x to crash, so we've disabled it so you can continue to use Flock.

The long answer:  This is not a matter of Google toolbar or Flock being broken: the toolbar is reading Flock 1.x's user agent string as Firefox 3, and trying to do things Flock 1.x can't do, causing a crash.

We've reported this issue to Google, and hopefully they will get the toolbar updated so it realizes that Flock 1.x is based on Firefox 2.  You can help by submitting a report of this issue to Google at http://www.google.com/support/firefox/bin/request.py?contact_type=problem.

The toolbar should work just fine in the Flock 2 beta, which is based on Firefox 3.  This is a great opportunity for you to grab Flock 2.  Although though still in beta, the changes provided by Firefox 3 already make Flock 2.0 a vastly superior product.  Beta 2 has largely been found to be stable, so making the switch is more likely to improve your browsing experience than hurt it.  You can download it and find more information at http://www.flock.com/beta/download

Update: If you've installed Flock 2.0 Beta 2 on Windows and are still having issues with Google Toolbar, the following steps may help:

1. Uninstall the Google Toolbar.
2. Go to C:/Documents&Settings/[your username]/Application Data/Flock/Browser/Profiles/[profile folder...will be a series of numbers and letters]
3. Remove the blocklist.xml file
4. Install the Toolbar the next time you start Flock. Keep in mind that this will only work on the 2.0 Beta.

If you are on another operating system and would like similar instructions to accomplish this task, please email me directly at the email address listed below.

I've been on flock 2 for a while now and almost forgot until this post, the transition is definetely seamless. I'd encourage anyone who's more than intermeddiate user to switch over.

I wouldn't recommend it to complete newbies ( a beta), but if you know your way around computers, you should be fine.

Is there a spanish version about Flock 2 beta to download? I'm getting the spanis version about Flock 12 from this link http://tinderbox.flock.com/builds/grouse_locale
but i don't find a similar link about Flock 2 beta. I'd like a deb package for Ubuntu for spanish version for Flock 2.

Thanks

I'm sitting here wondering why anyone needs Google Toolbar in Flock in the first place?

@Cristobal: Unfortunately there is not a spanish version of the Flock 2 beta. Most likely our localizers will not start working until we're code frozen on Flock 2.

flock is starting up way slower than my opera browser anything i can do to speed it up? btw i"m currently using flock two beta two the speed thing is the only reason i haven"t made flock my default browser>

I don't use G Toolbar with flock but I reported that problem through the link. Maybe it could help a bit.
Cheers

Oh so that was problem caused by Google Toolbar. Flock crashed for me absolutely and no reinstalling helped so I had to reinstall my Windows in order to use Flock again... (well I do not know if there was any other option, but it helped :)

Hello Evan

i have reported this issue to Google via the URL you included. But I personally do not have to worry about this problem as I am now using Flock 2 Beta :)

Regards

I agree.

Also, the fix posted here does not work on several different levels:

1. Just to get to that C:/Documents&Settings/[your username]/Application Data/Flock/Browser/Profiles/[profile folder...will be a series of numbers and letters]

Vista Explorer may not allow access that way. One workaround is to use Search(yeah, it's sucky & very slow in Vista).

2. More important though-- that blocklist.xml is NOT located there, but in Progam Files\Flock

3. STILL more important: Flock still blocks Google Toolbar Install...even with other known hacks: Mr.Tech, about:config disable extension/browser version check & security check.

Updated path to find blocklist.xml in Vista:

C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Roaming\Flock\Browser\Profiles\yadayada\

I didn't use flock 2 as my primary browser, because I can't worked without google toolbar. Now all seems to be ok. Thanks for the update, Evan!

Google Toolbar never crashed my browser. In fact, it hasn't crashed yet in over 3 months of use. But now the GT has been yanked away from me as "unsafe". Wouldn't it make more sense to let the user make this decision? Especially if security isn't an really an issue? BTW, I'm writing this from Firefox. And I can't remember why I switched to Flock in the first place! I hope v2 comes out soon or I might not want to swtich again. :)

Hey John,

Google Toolbar may have not yet crashed your browser, but it would have started to. Offering you an option would have been offering an option between crashing and not crashing. Understandably, we don't want people to have a crashing experience with Flock.

The Flock beta runs flawlessly and I had no trouble installing the Google Toolbar. Very nice work! Read a review on the Flock browser at http://www.ourlullaby.com/2008/08/what-the-flock-is-that/

Glad to see this post. This should have been the first thing that happened when you disabled everyone's Google Toolbar with no explanation (other than there was a security problem with it, which isn't true).

The Google Toolbar works in Flock 2, but the Bookmarks still don't work correctly. Don't make me fly away Flock!

Thanks for the update, Evan! The Google Toolbar work now..

I was wondering what the problem was with the google toolbar..glad to find this post. I will have to check out the beta 2.0 version of Flock. Any ideas why flash players on blogtalkradio.com have problems working in Flock?
Thanks!

Hello! I have tried to install the google toolbar for Firefox on Flock and it keeps giving me an error message saying that it is a known threat for viruses. Does anyone else get this message?

Yeah, the error message is related to Flock disabling the Google Toolbar. As Evan mentioned, the makers of Flock disabled this Toolbar as an add-on. Unfortunately, the error message when you try to install a disabled add-on is that "known threat for viruses" nonsense. I would suggest that some future Flock update include changing that message to "has been disabled for your safety and/or consistent browser experience"

Is the problem with the g toolbar now fixed? i decided to give flock a try (sounds very good what i´ve read about it) but i really need the toolbar, so is there any new information about the issue?

Flock 2.0 has been officially released, and supports the Google Toolbar. Give it a try from the main flock.com home page. At this moment, 2.0 is available only in English, but I presume German and other languages will follow shortly.

Thank you Chris for the information, i will do so.
Have a nice weekend, Bianca
