It wasn’t that long ago when people were buzzing about the (then) whiz kid, Marc Andreessen, and his amazing Mosaic browser, which later resulted in the explosive growth and meteoric rise  of the Netscape browser. Netscape not only brought the Internet to the masses, but it played a role in changing the world. It goes without saying that the innovation was too important to go unnoticed.

That same spirit of innovation that brought the original Netscape browser to 90% of our desktops, and ultimately the open-source Mozilla Project.  This started the populist movement inspiring developers from around the world to contribute code for the collective call-to-action of out-innovating its formidable competitor. Somewhere between the punk-rock appeal of the Boston Tea Party, and the socialist ideal of thousands of developers connected by a desire to work together to build a superior product, the Open Source movement flourished better than ever before. With AOL’s support, the Mozilla Project became the Mozilla Foundation, and Firefox became the rallying cry for users seeking a more secure, better performing, innovative browser built by the people, for the people.

Our charter here at Flock has been made possible in part by coupling the same innovative spirit that pioneering Netscape developers used to bring browsing to the masses, with the foundation of shared technology that Mozilla’s Open Source charter generously makes available to us. We have been invigorated by the daily emails and positive comments we receive from our users, and feel confident that Flock is playing an important role of keeping the spirit of innovative browser evolution alive and well.

With the decision to cease ongoing support of the Netscape browser, we are honored to have the support and endorsement of AOL and Netscape, who have introduced Flock to millions of loyal Netscape users as AOL sunsets ongoing support for the Netscape products in the field. Tom Drapeau  from Netscape has been instrumental in helping increase awareness of the Flock browser, and by doing so has introduced a global audience of people to the unique experience that only the Flock browser delivers.

Flock is designed to support and enhance the way that we use the web today. We appreciate Tom’s assistance in helping get the word out, and encourage you to be a champion of innovation by telling your friends about your experience with Flock as well. If you like the idea of people working late nights to deliver a free product to you, so that you can get more enjoyment out of your daily web experience, please lend a hand.

Netscape ruled, and now Flock rocks! We’re committed to keeping the Netscape’s original spirit of innovation alive and well.

Congratulations!
The work you have been done and the product of your work deserve this and more, because it's excellent.

In a popup window, AOL suggest a migration to Flock as the new Netscape browser substitute. At first watch to this "Flock" there`s no doubts AOL finally killed Netscape with the whole nice spirit and prestige Netscape had in the past.
Flock “currently supports the following Webmail services: Yahoo or Gmail”, so I wonder why AOL is “selling” me a browser without mention them at all for support or anything practical.
Taking another look, Flock’s featuring a “Friend activity” so... It is a good idea to watch or to be watched by your friends or any people any time?
I think “Friend Activity” could turn your PRIVACY very weak.
Are you sure that’s how the Netscape spirit was Mr. Burkhart?
Certainly you scared me a lot: too many exposure and too little room to be safe.
Netscape is secure, keeps privacy, keeps spamers and malicious scripting activity away and never crash. Oh Yes, I'll keep the OLD Netscape no matter if there's no more support at all! ----> Z

@Zorkoniek - Thanks for your comments and concerns. If you prefer to not log into any of the supported services such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, or Flickr, your Friend Actvity Feed will never activate. You can simply delete it and there will be no annoyance for you.
Even if you choose not to use Flock's 'People' services, Flock is still a world class browser. We hope you'll give us a try.

Go, Flock! :)

Flock is just an absolutely heaven-sent experience for me. I can't wait to see where it goes. I had been a bit of an internet shut-in before... now I have no excuse not to know what's going on in the world. >;3

Dan:

I've noticed that lately Flock is very secretive about its upgrades. Its sites don't mention them in a timely manner. For example, a few days ago Flock launched version 1.1.1; however this number does not appear at Flock's Main Site nor at Flock's Blogs site (here).

If you want to download the Flock's latest version, the orange box indicates, the version is 1.1 instead of 1.1.1. This is very confusing for a person new to Flock.

Is there a reason for this, or is it an oversight?

Regards,

Omar.-

Hey Omar,

As always, we're not intending to be secretive. We don't blog here about minor upgrades, but we go into depth at http://developer.flock.com/blogs/releasenote/. Info on 1.1.1 is not up yet because Mike Dosik just got back from Hawaii, but I'm sure he'll get to it soon. :)

The download button on the website indicates only the major version (1.1 series), not the individual item. It's possible we'll change this, we have to discuss the pros and cons.

If you like the idea of people working late nights to deliver a free product to you, so that you can get more enjoyment out of your daily web experience, please lend a hand.

That's the magic of open source software! While Firefox is improving the experience of being on the web, the first impression I got from using Flock was that it was increasing my experience of being connected on the web!

I've given Flock a number of tries, but every time I come away disappointed in the lack of integration with one of the largest innovative companies of late: Google. The single most useful feature that I continually miss and causes me to uninstall Flock is the lack of support for "live text" from Google. I simply do not care for Yahoo, plain and simple.

From my experience, the Flock browser appears to have sold out to Yahoo by the way Flock is being used to focus search and users back to Yahoo services. Thus in my experience, Flock is really just a marketing tool for Yahoo, and if you are a huge Yahoo fan that is fine, but for me, the lack of Google "live text" integration is a deal killer.

Sincerely,

Steven

I personally love the personal touches that has been added to Flock.. integrating such a useful features is absolutely amazing,, it really feels like a personal helper is doing all the magic to make the net surfing a much enjoyable and enriching experience.. .

However, i would like to see Flock not resting in Firefox having a leading role ,, i would like Flock to be more inspiring in the creativeness part,, and just a small remark that i hope will add to Flock successes,,, the add-on feature in Flock offers a few number of choices,, i know that we could add Firefox add-on but i would like Flock to recommend more add-ons that Flock believe that they meet Flock visions and class... .. .

All The Best Flock Team,,,

A Flock Fan =)

I've used Netscape 9, Flock is better.

I've tried at least 11 or 12 different web browsers and Flock is one of the best, it is even better then Lynx on all but configurabitiy hehe.

I'm glad you guys can continue the Netscape Legacy. I have used Netscape in the very beginnings, when hotmail didn't belong to a Corporation. Those were great times for Internet and everything was so now, so exciting. I can feel the same "Netscape" experience in every Mozilla "flavor", but definitely Flock is my favorite.

Question: Can I translate your letter and post it in my website? I thing that would be a great news for all non-English speaking people.

Respectfully,

AR

I've tried Flock now for a couple of days and I'm really flabbergasted with the experience. For the first time I have everything that I consider important in my browser. I've tried Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Safari and others, but Flock just outpasses them.
Thanks for this experience!

Love Flock, but find that my use of it is still limited. I do lots of movies and videos and find that there are limited addons supported by Flock. I hope there are plans to make programs like Realplayer compatible with it in the future.

My family introduces me as "Mr. There's Gotta Be A Better Browser" since I have tried every browser that is available and have been moderately happy with a few until Flock--it has everything I need and then some. It is now my permanent browser--I can't imagine what the future will bring--please keep "wowing" us (one way would be to allow local favorite and tag sorting [for the life of me I cannot organize the favorites consistently])!

Keep up the great work!

Remember... anything is possible!

I’d have to venture that pretty much ever since Netscape went under and basically lost the browser war to Microsoft, there’s been an utter stagnation in the feature set of the browser - with the main improvements being things like security and cosmetics. Honestly, what does IE7 bring to the table in terms of a fundamental feature set?

I’d have to say that it’s about time for someone to once again extend the feature set of the browser, and start taking in some new territory — and once again start providing something new to majorly change and extend the way we use the Internet, which is what I'd say Flock does. I think it's brilliant. That's why I wrote it up on a post I did on the stagnation of the browser feature set and the unfortunate end of the old Browser War.

Everything sounds great about Flock, but I can't download it. A window appears that
says, the disk, folder or file is write-protected. Write-enable the disk and try again,
How do I do that? It downloaded just fine on our other IMac. What's up?

I just downloaded adn installed Flock. When I tried to run it, it couldn't access anything, not even flock. com. I had to uninstall Flock and restore my system to before the Flock installation. I don't care how good your browser might be. It's no good to me if I can't use it! Furthermore, I couldn't even access the Internet using my old Netscape 8 software (at least not until I restored the system). I feel deserted. I've been a loyal user of Netscape despite the onslaught of IE Explorer. But when I tried Netscape 9 and had problems, I got no response to my request for help, and now Flock is giving me trouble. Very disappointing.

@mlbledsoe @LRM: This is not the average experience for Flockstars, and I apologize. There must be something odd going on. Shoot me an email (evan at flock dot com) and we'll work with you to hunt it down.

Flock 1.1.1 is too slow for me compared to Firefox 3.0. Not Flock's fault, Gecko 1.8 just doesn't hold a candle compared to Gecko 1.9's speed, but I hope Flock quickly release a new version powered by Gecko 1.9.

Flock is great =) keep up the good work. I see some people are bashing it already, just remember people Flock is still a baby compared to some of these other browsers. As great as it is already just give it time and it will beat all other browsers hands down!

I'm sad to see Netscape go, however, I really like Flock! Keep up the good work! :-)

Flock is a very nice browser.
It has a nice look and feel, many useful gadgets
and it is fast and reliable.

Having read all the pro's and con's on Flock, I'll be downloading it soon to check it out. The hardest part for my self is using the "internet" since before there was an internet, that was before there was an AOL to use as an internet portal only at that time. My first HTML reader was NETSCAPE 1.0 , I've upgraded as far as ver7.2, after that AOL owned it and the upgrades haven't been that great, I've seen the end of Netscape coming for the past 1 1/2 year at least. Lastly, I'll goto Firefox or Flock before I go to IE.
GOOD LUCK Flock

flock rocks |||||||||||

I like the new browser - I loved Netscape. I just have one question - how does FLOCK handle mail if it's not webmail but through an ISP? I miss my mail function in Netscape and PLEASE don't tell me my only choice is IE.

It is interesting to note everybody is talking about flock, netscape and firefox. I started using mosaic eaons ago and and netscape was a real upgrade to mosaic and sometimes for nostalgic times I use it.

Is Flock compatible with Real Audio Player ?
If not is there a way to make it so?

Absolutely love Flock, keep up the good work and the free spirit approach, your broswer oozes it!

@Your Name: Shoot me a line at evan at flock dot com and I will try to sort out your webmail issue.

@suvade: Please shoot our Community Support Lead an email about your Real Audio Player issue. Her email is jen at flock dot com

@everyone else: Thanks, you rock!
