last.fm support

Last.fm is one of the oldest and most unique Web 2.0 startups with a very strong social background and following. I think that if anything, it should probably be included in Flock 1.0 to promote both services.

Hello,

last.fm is indeed cool: both I and Flock itself have accounts there. How do you imagine integration of last.fm into Flock? Within the sidebar or something else?

Personally, I think that within the sidebar along with all the other services is probably the best bet for seamless integration. I've been using the 1.0 beta and I love how everything in the People sidebar just flows together nicely. So when I thought of last.fm, I imagined it being there.

Both of the above posts were made by me, by the way.

In addition, I don't think that all of the recommendations are all that necessary to integrate: Most people using last.fm have the client running in the background anyway. I do think that what you're listening to and what your friends are listening to is an important thing to integrate though.

Hey J,

I love to see what my friends are listening to, and I will always be a strong supporter of any kind of music integration into Flock. I will log your vote for last.fm and it will probably get looked at for later this year (1.1 is already fairly locked down).

Flock on!

i too would love to have last.fm support in flock. in the left bar seems the most logical place to put it. but might also be handy to have a play/next/love/ban visible at all times in a toolbar or something.

With last.fm integrated in Flock, with the possibility to play music and ban/skip/next, Flock would replace one more program on my desktop.

ditto to everything said already - this'd be great

Just downloaded 1.0 It kicks ass. Love the side bar. I totally agree with the last.fm integration. I don't want it...i NEED it. Just tell me who I have to send beer to. Or code to for that matter.

I'd like to see Last.fm integrated into Flock too - was surprised to find that it wasn't already!

Me, too! Please bump this up. Also, being able to drag {.mp3 links|Artist Names|Album Names} to my friends in the sidebar would be awesome. Thanks!

Wow, check out all the last.fm love! Votes logged, this is quite the response. :) This isn't going to happen in the short term because it'll involve some new design, but this many votes will definitely put it into consideration.

@Jeff Smith: If you're interesting in coding this yourself, you can get resources to do so at developer.flock.com. Feel free to email me for any help.

add my vote 2

cunninG

November 15, 2007 - 2:52pm

As an idea, the simplest would be to make Last.fm sideboard much like the Twitter sideboard, with the list of Last.fm friends and what they're listening to, links to share, recommend, tag and love tracks (both your own and of your friends) and also a link to the song any of your friends might be listening. It would serve the social networking role of both Last.fm and Flock, to listen to whatever your friends like and share what you like back. With message and shout as a nice touch too :)

I'm all about this. I downloaded the 1.0 and was pleased that it knew Flickr and Facebook, but c'mon, no Last.fm? This is easily as important a site. ;)

Big vote for Last.FM -

Here's how I'd like to see it used. Easily you can add last.fm to the people sidebar, but how about using the photo-stream function in the same way you use the album art browse in i-tunes? It would be awesome to be able to scroll through live music feeds in the same way you can scroll through your own album collection! I mean, it's a media stream, why not add music? While your at it, incorporating iTunes would be the coolest thing ever.

I don't even think incorporating iTunes would be necessary, and in fact I oppose it because it's nastily platform-depedent. (iTunes isn't available for everybody, you know.) The Last.fm client, however, which is notably cross-platform ;), does a great job with album art.

Last.fm offers widgets for blogs and such that pull album art from Amazon, so I assume those feeds would be harnessable for Flock integration.

Seriously Flock and Last.fm were made for each other. I wouldn't be surprised if they are already making plans for a long term commitment. Am I right?

Either way add my vote.

the only two web 2.0 sites i use extensively are facebook and last.fm...when they are both available from within flock i can see it becoming a serious contender for replacing safari, on my computer at least...so i guess that's another vote for last.fm

last.fm is enormous. if anything, i would start with an mp3 playback support, just as the "PagePlaylist" Addon for Firefox does (basic idea of songbird, i think). That would support Free mp3 of last.fm too. maybe a vorbis plugin for ogg/flac on archive.org. that should cover the most common things.

including the whole player is a bad idea imho. there's a reason why the development of their player took them at least 2 years to get there where they are, and its running THEIR tracks. i assume you can't get their tracks played.

Unique about last.fm is the Artist similarity thing. i'd like to type an artist and get his genre and the most similar acts, as well as a list of the most common tracks/albums about him.

that would be a last.fm browser for me that reads the most important readable informations. ...everything user related is stunningly well done in their dashboard - which is already very much flock compatible. oh and the flashplayer works very well too. :)

PS: you should not forget, that loading songs into your browser takes a lot off your connection speed, and loading into the browser-cache might flaw the system. i feel some ideas are not very well thought through by people... i would really like to read a lot more opinions about HOW you want last.fm integrated.
