Google Reader Integration

I like the RSS reader built into Flock, but because I have to use multiple computers on a regular basis, the need to keep a constant state between machines is the most important feature in any RSS reader for me.

Would it be possible to have the list of feeds and the list of read items synchronized between Flock and Google Reader?

If I read an item in Google Reader, it would beupdated in Flock and vice versa.

Ok that is really really creepy, I just came to the flock forums to suggest the same thing, and someone else has aswell at the top of the page.

Flock already supports subscribing to Google Reader, but I'd really like if there was an option to subscribe with multiple readers. I use the Flock reader on a daily basis, but it's a pain when you can't access your RSS from abroad.

I tried to import my google reader OPML (actually .xml) into Flock but not all the feeds (nor tags) came with it, only a few. Is there a limit?

I agree and also came to the page to suggest this!

I use google reader on multiple devices (different PCs, pda, mobile phone) so having the feeds stored in flock on one machine would mean a loss of functionality. However, it would be great if my google reader feeds could appear on my flock myworld page etc as I like the look of this feature!

In truth, I think it is too late for me to stop using google reader as I have so many feeds and items stored in there already, so any attempt to replicate, rather than integrate, google reader would be much less useful than actually having full integration of flock with google reader.... I have no idea if this is technically possible, I just know it would be awesome!

PS Keep up the good work - flock is fantastic.

I also tried to import my google reader OPML, but only a few of the feeds were imported. Is there a limit? If so, is to possible for me to change the config to allow for more?

I'm loving Flock 1.0!

Google Reader -- yeah, me too! Please? Somebody A Google toolbar would be nice to have in the mean time. Otherwise, I like Flock.

Hey folks,

From what I hear, Google Reader has some issues with OPML. See http://technosailor.com/google-reader-opml-conversion-tool/ for a workaround.

As for integration, it sounds like what you folks really want is Flock to sync the Feed Reader across computers. :)

yes. i would abandon google reader if i could sync the flock reader between computers or, more precisely, independent of computers, keeping the sync on the server-side.

Well... maybe! But don't forget Google reader works on mobile phones, PDAs, ipod touches etc too... but if you are planning Flock releases for mobile devices at any point then it's goodbye Google reader!

I agree--syncing Flock w/ Google Reader would be great.

I'm not so interested in syncing Flock between computers--I plan on continuing to use Opera at work--I don't need any of Flocks distractions, er...features, at work, just uber-functionality.

but I like being able to read my feeds at lunch (or between tasks). Opera's feed reader is great, but I'm not so interested in having two or more applications open when they ought to be doing the same thing. And google reader, while better, than most, still isn't spectacular when it comes to reading a lot of feeds.

Hm I personally gave up Google Reader a while ago in favor of Netvibes, which I find vastly superior. It doesn't really have any social networking aspects (not that GR does), but I'd definitely like to see it supported by Flock to some degree.

I personally find Flock's RSS reader functionality a bit clumsy, but if it talked to my Netvibes account and synced up, I'd definitely use it a lot more! Although in general I find myself wanting more customization options in Flock, especially regarding presentation.

I'll throw my vote in for Google Reader synchronization as a feature for Flock. Lovin' the Gmail integration. Thanks,

Yeah! One more vote to the integration between Flock and Google Reader. Until its not implemented, I'm using the extension GoogleReaderWatcher, that lets me know when I have unread feeds.

I was going to suggest this too. Syncing feeds by itself is nice, but Google Reader has the best RSS feed experience on my iPhone (at least until the iPhone apps start rolling in). My vote is to please be able to use Flock as a Google Reader client.

I have to throw another vote for the sync between Google Reader and Flock. Or, better said, a formal integration between Google Reader and Flock.

My main reason for moving to Flock from Firefox is that I pretty much used to have most of the already integrated functions of Flock saved as locked, protected, and FavIconized tabs tabs on my Browser but hated that in doing so, my cache ballooned out of this world and the RAM usage by Firefox skyrocketed (~80-120 MB to 160 - 240 MB) from before where I was casually opening and closing the tabs as I needed. I made the jump to Flock because it seemed logical to me that with the integration of those services into the browser itself, less resources would be used than having so many tabs open for days.
However, I still have one tab in a faviconized state and always open on my browser and that's my Google Reader account. I have to agree with the people posting that any integration with Google Reader that doesn't keep items in sync with the Google servers is useless for me for the same reasons listed previously with regards to mobile devices.

I'd really love to see the next iteration of Flock include this functionality as that would probably get me to make a full fledged move to flock at home, work, and laptops.

I'd love to see both Google Reader (and Google Talk, for that matter) integrated into the browser too. I particularly miss GR's share function and I'd like to integrate new things I've "starred" with my previously saved posts within GR.

Failing that, I'd like a Flock reader that works with the iGoogle homepage. I really like being able to read feeds without having to open a new page.

Add my vote for integration with Google Reader. I'd also love it if Flock had the ability to sync all my settings, bookmarks, accounts across multiple computers similar to Google Browser Sync for Firefox.

April 4, 2008 - 8:09am

Absolutely - I would have Flock open all the time if my google reader feeds were integrated with it. I exported my google feeds to my desktop, then tried to import them with Flock, but when I browse for it, it doesn't see the file. The file is named google-reader-subscriptions.xml. Interestingly it worked on my mac, but not on my PC.

Got my vote for integration. I love the online bookmark integration (was never interested in Delicious et al before Flock), and being able to store feeds through Google reader but have access to them in a standard 'Flock-like' way would be ideal.
Failing that, yeah, Flock-based syncing would be the next best thing. Certainly not as good as an integrated service accessible through other browsers when necessary, but better than nothing.

It isn't up to Flock. Google doesn't want to integrate, it wants you to visit the Google Reader site. http://www.google.com/support/reader/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=70572

Google reader integration could work like this:

You could change an option to use either Flock's built-in RSS reader or an online-based one like Google Reader.

If you choose Google Reader, when you click the RSS sidebar icon, instead of seeing a list of RSS folders, you see a list of Google Reader tags.

When you click on one of the tags in the sidebar, the main screen could show the regular Google Reader page for that tag - minus the standard tag sidebar (because they're already in the Flock sidebar).

Obviously it all depends on what you can do with the Google API, but this way any special feed viewing settings set in Google Reader remain, since the main page would be almost exactly the same as if you had navigated to the page normally.

Ok, we seem to have quite a consistent influx of people coming asking for this feature since October of last year and so far, no real feedback other than "we've logged your votes" and that was prior to the swell of "add my vote" cries that came in.

Can we please have some kind of developer comment or update on this request?
