More social networks

oi.

I'm a brand new Flock-user and I must say.. I'm impressed.
Lovely work you guys have done so far.

I really like the integration of the social networks,
but there are a few vital ones missing.

Myspace ( not that I use it.. but loads of people do :) )
Digg
deviantART ( I really would love to be able to use this one.. I'm not sure how it could be done.. what you guys would need in order to make this one work.. but..
I'm part of the staff over there.. so I might be able to ask around and see if there is something that can be done... if needed )

Anyway,
good luck.. and keep up the great work.

Jan.

Hey Jan,

Thanks for the feedback, it's lovely to hear how everyone is enjoying the product. :)

We're certainly not stopping at four social networks...more will be coming soon. I welcome suggestions here or at my email address, and I log every vote. These votes are combined with some other factors in deciding what we'll integrate next. These other factors can make it quite a bit more complicated than "we want this"...they include development resources, brand compatibility (Disney is not very Flock), audience size on the service, and (very importantly) the availability and strength of an API to integrate with.

That said, Flock can be extended like Firefox and we are working to enhance our developer resources so it's even easier for third parties to integrate other services into Flock. Those interested can swing by developer.flock.com and email me if they have any questions/comments/concerns.

More is coming, no worries about that. Flock on! :)

I'd like to see DeviantArt too, at least in the media bar. I'd try to do it myself, but I checked out the developer section, and there's not too much there yet.

To add to the request list, I would love to have MySpace and LinkedIn - those are what would make Flock the killer browser for me. Don't know what their APIs are, but that's what I actually use so the more support for that the more I'll use Flock.

Beyond the requests, it's lovely to see a new browser so focused on integrating web services - great work!

Hey guys,
I am very impressed with flock so far, and will continue to use it for the near future. Can you confirm that myspace support is being actively worked on? It'd be awesome to get some sort of myspace sidebar and system that uses their network and avoids the general ugliness of their website as much as possible. An option to ignore all the css and have it all look the same would be amazing (and probably get you many many new users!)

This may be heresy but support for Windows Live won't hurt either. Assuming that it's possible to do; MS isn't known for making it easy for 3rd party apps to talk to their services.

Hey folks,

Thanks for the suggestions, they've been logged.

@Niall: I can confirm that MySpace is being investigated. Up until Opensocial they didn't have an API, so integrating them was out of the question: we don't like to do half-assed integrations. Obviously with Opensocial in the picture we're investigating.

@Tristan: I haven't used Windows Live...are there friends in Live? I don't really understand what it is.

Flock on,

Hi guys,i would like Deviant art integrated in two place: Image upload and media search (maybe show buddies online like flickr). DA has 45,937,338 deviations as im writing this, the number of users is alot more than flickr and myspace. Please integrate it in the feature list and give it some priority,as it is very popular in artist communities.
Thanks

Get Gmail, GDocs, GCal, and GReader integrated. Especially my contacts from Gmail.

LinkedIn would be nice, too.

And Plaxo.

But primarily the Google apps.

Hey,
I can understand the issues involved in myspaces lack of an API, and that you don't want to have a half-assed integration, but until myspace support is done, flocks integration into social networking is glaringly half-assed.

Please update us a little more often regarding myspace issues, this is relevant for oh, how many millions of potential users??

Hey! Great browser, I didn't believe it, but it actually changes how I use the web.

Here's a vote against MySpace. MySpace as a social utility is a little behind as far as web-services go. Sure, it's got a giant usrerbase, but It needs to be completely re-vamped as far as I'm concerned. Should you like to add it, no complaints.

P.S. -- I don't think there's anything half assed about flock at all. Keep doing what you do. Flock on!

Ning! Rich and open API. 125k networks that will work in Flock sidebar with simple integration. Agh you guys are halfway done with this idea when I even write it.

SixApart stuff too... MovableType4 Community Solution.

LinkedIn would be nice, but less necessary as it is not anyone's (anyone who is employed :-) daily social network. More of an ongoing resume type deal.

I like that Flock (in addition to OpenSocial, of course) is kind of putting pressure on networks to provide APIs. This is awesome for users!

Tossing in my vote for more networks. I was stamping mad when I downloaded 1.0 and found out it had so few networks! (I don't follow YouTube much, but it did get me to sign up for a Twitter account!)

@Niall: I'm not sure what to tell you...yes, MySpace is big. But we're not going to put out a half-assed product. People may want Apple to make a certain type of audio file work on the iPod, but they're not going to do it in a way that breaks the iPod software. Make sense? In any case, this may all be moot if MySpace now has an API through OpenSocial.

I would like to post my support for all Google service related Apps plus LinkedIn to be integrated into Flock. I've been a long time Firefox user and am really impressed with what you've done with Flock. The way you've organized and presented the social components of the Web is great. I can see how it has the potential to be more than just a "fun" application and instead a truly functional tool. The one area that I haven't seen discussed is the integration of online backup services. When Google officially gets in the game this will be a very useful addon. Just my two cents. Thanks.

I completely agree. Linkedin is the key for me. The capabilities that you provide are awesome, but not having one of my top two social networks is a killer. Please let me know when linkedin is supported so that I can become a flock user.
Thanks,
Dale

How about some virtual worlds like Second Life, Hipihi, Novoking, Active Worlds, etc.? Second Life has a friends list, so do Hipihi and Novoking.

I have read some interesting suggestions on this site. I just downloaded Flock, and I'm trying to see how this tool will help my field of work. I work in a small academic library for a private college. We have been trying to integrate all the web 2.0 social software into our library to put our library out there to our students. This is a huge change for the library world, and I really think that Flock might be a helpful tool in the future. Right now we are using MySpace and Facebook to promote our library, as well as using every messenger service known to man to help connect with our students. We also use blogger.

Some applications that I would like to see would be MySpace, Meebo ( a web bases instant messenger), and Zoho.

I just reinstalled Flock (i had it a while ago but wasn't active enough online to make it worthwhile) and am really surprised that Digg wasn't supported under people. Digg networks are the way you get a story popular so digg friends are quite important.

Also a Digg this (and Blog this) button somewhere would be nice. (For firefox I have a digg extension which tells me how many diggs the page i'm viewing has and allows me to digg it - not checked if its available for Flock yet).

Additionally I'd love more google integration, especially gmail so I could at least see when I have new mail. It would be awesome if a gmail sidebar popped up on new mail.

Finally deviantART would be really nice.
I must say the facebook integration makes it using Flock a requirement!!!! Would it be possible, as per the gmail suggestion, to make the people/facebook sidebar appear when you get a new message?

Thanks for all the hardwork,
Eris

@everyone: Your suggestions are much appreciated, but if you're discussing a totally new type of integration (Second Life) or a broad collection of services (Google Apps) it's hard for us to do anything with that suggestion. What is it that you want us to make easier with those services.

@Amy: The next planned People integration is MySpace, but there are some others potentially in the works that I can't discuss. As soon as we know we can integrate them, we'll announce.

@C.F.R.: Unlikely to happen...Opera is a competitor.

I think Flocks is really good with what I has right now but it could be better. To be able to compete with bigger browser it needs to support myspace, and also ims like windows live messenger, yahoo messenger, aim, and more. You might be able to use the website pages for these (the part of the messenger where you can im from a web page, no software installation required). You could have requests sent to a flock server which sends the requests to the im web server then the flock server configures the page for flock sidebar and sends it the flock browser. I think php would be a good language for that. I use to do it on my site doing php. It would also be good to have mapping services like google maps and mapquest integrated to show dirrections and maps in the sidebar. It would also be nice to be able to search in a sidebar menu and all the results (images, websites addresses, etc....) appear in it instead of a new web page. The ability to post to Google pages would also be nice to but that may be pushing it a little to far. One more thing that I was dieing for when I used Firefox was a sidebar that contained a list of extensions you could install. In the side bar you would be able to click install to install the extension, about to see about it, etc.... It would much more easier and nicer to install extensions that way instead of having to go to a web page.

Hope I can help in any way !

Anthony , The Flock lover !!!!!

P.S. I hope may ideas aren't impossible for you to do at this time

Hi5.

Flock is a good idea and looks beautiful, and I would love to use it. But if only one or none of the sites we use are supported on it, then there is no reason to replace our other browser yet, since with only one site to check with flock it is no different than just logging into the one site itself and seeing the features there.

When flock supports the main top social networking sites, that everyone has friends on. (because it is about what our friends use, not just what we use), then it will be really irresistable and time saving and a lot of people will feel like if they want to manage their social internet life with least obstacles they don't have the option not to use it.

The top social networking sites at the moment according to alexa and others, and by number of users, are supposed to be bebo, hi5, facebook, friendster, multiply, myspace, orkut.

And I will just say I think windows live spaces too, is used by a lot of people (because of it's integration with many people's main or only chat messenger) and a lot of them would use some of these other social networks too, so could very well be the sort of people who would be interested in using flock.

On my side, it is not any one of these that would make me most excited about flock, but a variety of them, and all the mainly used options I am likely to want.

Well Said.

P.S. I like the Get addons thing in the developer preview. I good because it takes away the boring stuff you don't wana look at when finding an extension. Plus you know the extensions from a trusted source. The Sulfur Beta rules so far !!!!

Hi there,

Nice what you did with Flock, but I feel its still really limited!
I really appreciate the hard work and ideas which went into this massive project, but it still falls kind of short, because I have to log ON to Pownce and then sign in and then....you get my drift, it kind of defeats the purpose of having flock as an all-in-one integrated website.
Until we are able to add the option of popular sites such as:

-Friendster
-MySpace
-Pownce
-43 Things
-Digg

My friends and I will hold off installing Flock. We'll be visiting the Flock blog everyday though, in eager anticipation!
We desperately want to support the Flock cause! :)

Loves,
Yuff
