Hello,

I don't know where to ask, but the only reason I Stay with Firefox is because of Foxmarks. Is there anything similar with Flock.?

Thanks.

There does not appear to be anything like this currently, but I will add it to my requested extensions list which will be given to third-party Flock developers.

Hi,
I am "Your Name".. LOL

I would really appreciate it. For everything else, I love Flock. There is also another FF extension named "Online Bookmarks Manager" that does almost the same thing. Maybe that could be reworked for Flock. Foxmarks is more popular.

Me three for Foxmarks ... I just discovered/fell in love with Flock, and it's just a PITA to have to re-import my FF bookmarks into Flock. Especially since it seems that Flock is going to become my blogging tool of choice :-)

I am presently trying Flock and so far I think it's well on the way to becoming my default browser. Just one little thing though, why FLOCK? Was there a reason for the name? Is it an acronym? It just seems a little 'uncool', or am I missing something very obvious?

One more vote for Foxmarks! I'm playing with Flock and I'm loving it so far, I'm almost ready to make the switch, but not having Foxmarks and/or Google Browser Sync is a deal breaker. I work on a number of machines on different platforms, many of which I don't have the privileges to install Flock so I need to keep as much as possible synced between browsers.

Just to follow up, I did some more searching around here and thought I'd clarify what I use this for.

I am a moderately heavy del.icio.us user, I have over 300 bookmarks and I use these in all of my Firefox browsers via the del.icio.us search. However, I have very specific favorites toolbar setup using Smart Bookmarks Bar to maximize space. I've actually created favicon.ico files for a few sites that don't have them. Unfortunately, my system changes just enough to make it a pain to change in FF and in Flock having some way to sync them would perfect!

Hey folks,

Appears there's been a bit of a misunderstanding. I will certainly suggest this to excited third-party developers, but *we* do not make Foxmarks work in Flock, that's the job of the extension developer. It's an unfortunate fact that Flock doesn't use the same favorites system as Firefox, and so bookmarks/favorites-related extensions are not going to work by default across both browsers. However, you should bring your great enthusiasm for Foxmarks to the creators of the extension and ask them to develop it for Flock! We have a robust collection of developer articles available at developer.flock.com and we're more than willing to work with them.

Thanks for following this, Evan. I understand Foxmarks isn't something you guys would ever make direct changes to. But without being offensive, may I suggest that the Flock favorites system perhaps be modified in such a way as to play nicely with Firefox extensions? <=)

I'll have to do some more probing, as I don't immediately grasp the advantages of the Flock favorites system over that of Firefox.

Hey Ronocdh,

Thanks for your even-tempered response, it's much appreciated. :)

It's not so much that a specific feature of Flock's favorites doesn't mesh with FF's, it's that it's totally different code. However, as we transition to the Firefox3 codebase we will be moving back to largely using the same bookmarks/favorites code. I'd hold out for that...should fix the issue.

+1 for Foxmarks here too. I installed foxmarks directly from the foxmarks website. It worked ok on my Macs under Leopard 10.5.2. However, when I added my PC (Windows Vista Premium Home Edition) into the sync the files became corrupted. Foxmarks says it is a problem with the Firefox engine.

Would be fantastic if this would work. I installed Foxmarks inside Flock Browser and I see the icon on the lower right corner but it still syncs with Firefox, leaving the Flock favorites untouched.

Hey folks,

Foxmarks will likely work with Firefox3-based Flock, as we're moving our favorites code back to more accurately mesh with Firefox's. This'll be out later this year, after Firefox3 is officiallyr eleased.

Since FF3 is out... how soon until Foxmarks may be more compatible?

Thanks for the update Evan.
On the Mac I can't even get Flock to import ANY bookmarks at all. I have several Javascript buttons in my Toolbars folder, and I've wondered if that's the issue. The bottom line is that I can't get all my Firefox or Safari bookmarks into Flock at all, which is why I keep checking this Foxmarks thread.

I used Flock for a good three to four months, trying real hard to keep my bookmarks synchronized between my MacBook, my iMac at home and the MacPro at my workplace, until I determined that not having Foxmarks (or anything nearly as useful) on Flock was too great a loss, and I went back to FF2. Now I'm at FF3, loving the browser, but conscious of the great features I'm missing out on by not using Flock.

And it seems ridiculous to me that almost one year later, there is still no Foxmarks compatibility on Flock. And all because of a "favorites" system that fails to bring anything really new to the table of bookmarking experiences. FF's bookmarking system is adequate, why on earth did the Flock team decide to try and re-invent it? It's not like Flock's "favorites" system provides breakthrough bookmarking features that redefine bookmarks, or anything like that. Seriously, the bookmarking system was there on FF and it functioned perfectly... the work was cut out for you... sheesh!

So, really, after waiting for a full year, I ask the Flock team this: Was it worth it? 'Cause from way over here (you know, the user side of things) it sure wasn't. I can only hope that someone's ego is adequately fat and happy, and that we can all move on to better (and infinitely more useful!) things, like a trustworthy bookmarking system that works flawlessly with a well designed, useful and very popular FF extension, Foxmarks.

Alfonso: Try out Flock 2 Beta 2.. it's pretty stable, and it uses Firefox 3 as its base, so Foxmarks works, as does the awesomebar and other great things about FF3.

Evan Hamilton

August 13, 2008 - 4:32pm

@Alfonso: As Mike said, Foxmarks works in Flock 2. The lack of Foxmarks compatibility in Flock 1 was definitely part of the motivation for moving to a FF3-parity favorites system. So while I appreciate your passion, there's no need: it's already done.

No, it's not done. It's in beta. Beta is not equal to "done". Beta is equal to "not quite there yet". So, while I appreciate that the Flock team is working on this, my argument still stands: it's almost one year later and it's still not done.

On a related note, the beta seems to be coming along quite nicely. And while Foxmarks support is apparently flawless (kudos!), the facebook sidebar fails to correctlyupdate my status. Also, the twitter sidebar takes a while to update my friends' current twits (of course, this couls be a twitter problem, since they're usually having one network problem or another).

I agree that Foxmarks would be a great addition to Flock... for me, it is an important extension.
