Flock isn't about technology. Flock is about a feeling.

While the technology powers Flock, the reason you and I love this browser is because it makes the web fun and easy again.  Using Flock gets me excited about going online, keeps me in better contact with my friends, and makes my day easier.

the Avett Brothers band playing liveWith the new look of Flock's homepage and tour, we're fully embracing this feeling.  We scoured Flickr for days finding the perfect images that represented the fun, freedom, and ease of Flock. We've been all smiles viewing these pages day after day as we prepped them for launch.

Of course, nothing is permanent on the web and we're going to want to keep our homepage fresh with some new images in a few months.  Which brings us to...

The Flocktography Photo Challenge!

We want to take this fun, relaxed feeling even farther and put YOUR photos on the homepage!  Nobody knows the joy that is Flock better than you, and we're sure that you've got tons of photos of you and your friends that will shine on our homepage.

All you have to do is submit your photos.  We'll choose the finalists, and your fellow Flockstars will vote on who will be the winners!

The winner of the Flocktography Photo Challenge will have their photo featured on our homepage, and will also receive a collection of awesome Flock swag!

Entering the Challenge

Each Flockstar can submit up to 3 photos to our Flocktography group on Flickr.

Photos must be at least 917px wide by 385px tall.

Any person prominently featured in these photos should have given verbal or signed approval to be featured on flock.com...which means you shouldn't include a celebrity or musician photo unless you can get their approval.

Winning the Challenge

A group of qualified folks at Flock will choose the finalists for the Flocktography photo challenge.  Finalists will be called out in a discussion thread on the Flocktography Flickr Group.  At that point we'll let you know how YOU can vote for the winners.

friends fooling aroundObviously the rules are a little loose for this first contest as we feel it out, but we fully hope to do this again...hopefully with more organization, more submissions, and bigger prizes!

Please spread the word about this contest to all your awesome photographer friends (who, of course, you've already turned into Flockstars) so we can have a really awesome set of submissions.

We can't wait to see what you all come up with!

Flock'n'roll,

Hello Evan,

It is good to hear from you after 30+ days of your last post :)

Can you tell me one thing?
I see this "Art or illustration" in Flickr Group. So can we submit animations too? or only real pictures?

Regards

you can delete this comment later, but I thought it important to point out that the right-hand side of the central column of text gets overlaid by the sidebar in Opera 9.6 (the latest) -- i.e. the text extends out too far, and winds up underneath the sidebar visually, making it harder to read.

Being as Opera is currently among the most standards-compliant browsers on the market, it would behoove your developers to keep it in mind and actually USE IT when testing the website before releasing finished product to the wild, particularly as it would help you catch bugs like this (and before you go claiming that there's not enough people using it, I'd like to point out that that simply doesn't matter. It's possible it's an opera bug but the chance of that is quite quite small.)

As a web developer using Linux as his/her main operating system, I test in Opera, Firefox 2/3, IE 6/7, Konqueror, and Safari, before releasing inflicting finished website content on an unsuspecting client. It's nice to see I have a new browser to test with in addition to Chrome. and (nice!) 2.0 as well. Don't know how I managed to miss hearing about Flock, other than being too busy making the web a cleaner place to have web-standards in the first place, one site at a time (the ones I myself make, I refer to, not this little missive here -- since cleaning up the web in your case is in fact _your_ collective developer's jobs ;)

Looking forward to adding this to my arsenal. Who knows, you might even get to unseat Opera, but you have some stiff competition due to its standards compliance. (essential for testing stuff -- Moz engine still has html/css bugs in its bugzilla database that date back to the release of 1997-1999 (the time of HTML 4.0/.01 release!)

@angilinajetli: Yeah, it's been a long haul to get this thing out. That's a good question...animations, no, but illustrations are a *possibility*. That said, it's fairly unlikely we'd put an illustration up unless it really made sense for us.

@WebDragon of freenode: We actually do test in Flock, Firefox, multiple versions of IE, Opera and Chrome when we are QAing our website, and I don't see that issue in Opera 9.6. What page are you seeing this on?

Hi, Evan!!
I´m in the flock now and i really enjoy the browser. Wasn´t easy at the beggining, but with 2 days using it, i really can see the diference... About the photos for flocktography, i have a question: do you retain the copyright from the submitted photos or the copyright belongs to the artist, like in JPGmag?

Thanks in advance for the answer!!

@astronautaperdido: Thanks for the kind words! As for your question, you would retain the copyright. We just want to show off your awesome photography for a little while. :)

Not to sound unintelligent but 917px X 385px is what general conversion, would that be similar to a 4x6 and when is the contest deadline? Thank you
p.s. love the flock browser had been using the beta version for a while now very impressed with the final release

Hey Mike,

It's better to go by the pixel measurement, but here's what our designer had to say:

6 inches wide by 4 inches tall at 72 dpi is too small and wont work out.

6 inches wide by 4 inches tall at 300 dpi may work out.
