A simple question to kickstart your creativity: if you could change one thing about search in Flock, what would it be? Would you add something different to the as-you-type dropdown, or take something out? Would you change the default search plugins? What else? Remember, you have to pick one so make it the thing you really, really would love to see :)

The search field needs a button (as Safari does for example) that allows you to one-click clear the field before entering a new search. Particularly, when clicking in the field for Flock does a drop down of results rather than a "select the contents" there is now easy way of starting a new search without using dragging, keyboard shortcuts etc.

Google! At least add Google to the list of default engines to choose from.

Amy

FYI Amy, that's already and opition. You can change your default search engine by clicking "Search Preferences" at the bottom of the search bar dropdown.

1. There are too many search engines available. Either group them to certain categories, or remove the duplicate ones, leaving the most used.

2. The search window is cool, but too much NOT like what one would expect of this window (actually, it shouldn't look like a "window", but like a dropdown menu). Make it more like the location bar, with icons that show what you see. Or look at the Firefox 2.0-search bar. It's stressful to use it, somehow.

Agree with John Collis, but I'd say instead of having a button, just have the contents of the Search field become highlighted when the field gains focus. That way, no matter if I click in the field or Cmd+K (Ctrl+K) into it, the contents are ready to be replaced.

Keep the dropdown-on-focus, though.

Agree with SebastianM.

ok - not exactly a "feature" per se but the only thing on my mind is your release of your FF2.0 integration - i can't wait to "flock" to one browser! :)

I read a Wired Monkey Bites post in regards to it being due out in early December - is this just a rumor? How's it coming along? need any testers? ;)

A necessary ultimate thing for me is an unified profile folder.
I see it as some exportable backwards-compatible unit that contains info of all my settings, plugins, feeds and so on. User-oriented, rather than current system-oriented.

Say, even a setting-list file, which could be even synchronized online, something like this: "Hey, you have installed x plugin to another computer. Should I install it also here?"

So that all the bugs in the profile folderset (that I have now) could not be transfered to a fresh instalation or update.

It would be nice if the search-as-you-type dropdown could search in GMail directly. Google has a well documented API, so I hope it would be possible. IMHO it would make GMail even more superior to regular email clients.

I couldn't agree more with "You Name". As for the search thing I tend to use a bunch of different search engines ( i can save a whole buch of time ) and i would welcome the adoption of some "wrap up feature" for the drop down menu, because as i reach the bottom bar they hide behind and the items cannot be clicked.

Well, when I have many search engines installed, when I start typing in the search field preferences button and some search engines go out of the screen so I cannot choose them. Therefore, I believe the only solution is to put the scrollbar so you can have as many search engines and search results as you desire.

I would set default to always open a new tab, when showing search results. As it is, its rather dificult to predict if search opens a new tab or uses the existing one.

"Search Site" function as in the google toolbar

targeted search options. audio/video podcast, photo, code, technorati searches.

I would highly recommend adding local search engines from the start (i.e. Canada would see Yahoo Canada, Google.ca and Wikipedia and something for every nation).

I would set Google as the default search engine. instead of installing flock and then set Google as the default one.

Google is the best search engine, no matter if flock's sponsor is Yahoo. You should think first about the user rather than your sponsors.

Yahoo ain't bad as a search engine, but Google is the "perfection".

Why don't you think about: "Get Flock with the Google tool bar".

pd:/ I don't know why flock sets Google as gramatical misstake and why yahoo isn't.

And i would chage the as-you-type dropdown menu to a as-you-type and "as-you-click" dropdown menu.

Clear the search field on focus.

Thanks

I would really like it so the live search consumes a bit more screen real estate, my screen res is 1280x1024 so the live search just looks like a sidebar, and for some reason my mind has never ticked to use it, I usually just hit enter when searching... that's just me though :-)

Not a fan of flock's search, I mean yahoo as defaults fine I can change that, but I'd really like to be able to select the search engine (ie wikipedia) and then type what i want and press enter, instead of having to type then pick the search engine.

I get caught all the time looking on Wikipedia for 'Web Search' X|

Basically I'd like it if it behaved a bit more like firefox.

(on a side note, an option from the blog button to go to your blog would be welcome too!)

thanks!

The only one thing i would change is the text selecting in searchbox. I'm always having hard times trying to select text when popup(with "Search preferences" etc) appearing.. Can you make it simpler? Just like in FF 2.0 searchbox and popup implemented. It is fast and without any text selecting inconsistencies

For the search box, I'd like to see ebay as an option and perhaps make the default search engine user selectable. Or better yet, allow the user to maintain their own list of search engines and select the default. If the chosen search engine is not sophisticated enough to allow the "search as you type" functionality, then it would behave like a traditional search box.

Searching my news feeds! I think this is the most basic thing I find lacking in the current search. I want to be able to search all the current and archived news feeds. That would be the one thing that I think should be added.

Before reading this article, I posted on my blog about how navigation in browser should look like . As you can see, it mostly fits into flock UI, but it is also totally out of Flock concept. The point is that such bar should be used as main navigation tool and not as addition to URL bar, and it takes some more integration to achieve it (like recognizing URLs typed into access bar - my name for access bar)

And putting Your Name in the post form of this page is obviously bad idea, as it makes you forget that you have skipped field ;)

If you would do the kind of visualization Quintura does I would never use another browser.

I prefer the way that you can search with Chrome. It is far easier than with Flock. Although I am persisting with Flock because I am on the 30 Day Challenge and they highly recommend it. So I guess I just need to re-learn a few things.

But not being able to change the default search in the actual URL bar is not cool. We are forced to view Yahoo's results if you type a search phrase directly into the URL bar. I want to choose Google for this but I can find out for the life of me how to change this?

If some knows how to do this then please PM me. Thanks.
