So, I was recently explaining to a friend how impressed I was with the search results I was getting from Live.com, the new search offering from our friends at Microsoft. To prove my point, I went to Live.com and was about to do a search when I noticed a promotion: "Introducing 3-D Maps!". I'm not sure if anyone has tried Virtual Earth from MSFT Live, but it is very cool. In fact, I think most people would be surprised by how well Yahoo, Microsoft, and Ask's mapping offerings stack up against Google's these days. Anyhow, I digress...
When I start zooming in on Boston, eagerly anticipating the breathtaking 3-D views of my hometown, I got the following error message when I clicked the 3-D view option (I will type it out in case you can't read it):
"To use this feature, open Live Local Search in Windows InternetExplorer version 6 or 7. For more information, and to download the latest version, visit the Microsoft Internet Explorer website."
So my epiphany for the day is this, "$100 million dollars can buy a lot of innovation, but cannot change a culture that fundamentally is not geared towards respecting users." Google and Yahoo (despite stiff competition from everyone) seem to have the right balance of innovation and monetization (they are businesses after all), tempered with a healthy dose of competition. However, despite those drivers, they both seem to respect users first and foremost; I know this first hand from having worked with both. Microsoft, however, can't seem to shake its old habits. So sure, Microsoft might have inched forward this month with higher-resolution maps and 3-D rendering, but I will take my maps in 2-D for now and wait until I can get them without an OS attached!

yup, noticed this, as well as the photo synth thing they are developing (hell that doesn't even work with ie7).
I sometimes wonder why most people hate microsoft, love google (and on the whole like yahoo) - then every once in a while microsoft throw something our way to remind us.
I guess when you still hold a monopoly (and in my books ~85% of the browser market is a monopoly) it's tough luck buddy.
Thats no excuse, I'm no economist, but shouldn't consumer care come into your business model somewhere??
And once again, Microsoft proves that they don't give a damn about their customers (Anybody else remember the Windows ME catastrophe?).
I use to actually consider myself an MS loyalist. I loved their products, they served my needs, and they were, in my opinion, doing a great job.
In the past few years though, I have, more often then not, become totally jaded with them.
My opinion is this: if I can't view it in the browser of my choice, it's not worth my time.
Microsoft can flock off.

I wonder if this technical issue is because Microsoft developed the application using ActiveX that is only supported on IE. I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft updates this application soon since they are working with Mozilla's Firefox team. I think Microsoft has finally come to the conclusion that the game has switched and is no longer about the technology but rather about the content. I think the whole launce of live.com is a good example of the issue.
Anyone write a note directly to Microsoft yet? Its great to post all on blogs and Digg about issues but you still gotta go to the source and give them the opportunity to respond.
There are Microsoft products that I really like and then there others that I despise. So I'm not a fanboy but trying to fair. While the love is spread so generously for Google, it is becoming a Microsoft 2.0. Its likely only a matter of a decade or so before everyone turns on the behemoth and rallys for another yet unheard of start-up in the marketplace.

Not a Microsoft fanboy (nor a Google one!), but if you're interested in Boston, it's very well covered, and amazing to see in VE 3D. Better than Google Earth, which I prefer in general. If you've got a system that'll run VE 3D, it's worth giving a shot.
Microsoft's VE 3D is way behind in other places (check out central California coast - Ventura/Santa Barbara - high res is still in black and white!), but in major cities like Boston, Seattle, etc. the textured buildings rock.
Try the IE Tab extension for FF.....
you can even do Windows Updates with it....

Most of their websites work poorly with Safari and Opera, even though I know at least Opera has better standards support than Mozilla and/or IE. Google is becoming another Microsoft of the Web these days, you just wait and see.
