Flock Blog

It does not take much time to make a difference. Jon finds a little bit of time on a regular basis to test a feature of Flock or to verify a bug is fixed.

1) A little about yourself?

I am 20, and a poor college student planning to major in Computer Science. The first memory I have of computers is playing Oregon Trail on an old Apple II, I believe. When I was younger I knew DOS fairly well, and also worked with various versions of Windows. It wasn't until this past December that I got away from an Microsoft OS and installed Ubuntu. Besides computers, I enjoy many sports and a good movie.

2) What led you to get involved with the Flock project?

I first learned about Flock through an article on Digg.com. However I didn't download Flock until one of my friends recommended it. I used and continue to use Flock mainly to write blog posts. Over Christmas break, I began to get involved in writing bug reports and confirming bugs. I still write do volunteer QA work when college does not keep me too busy.

3) How does your contribution to Flock relate to the other activities in your life?

I have thought highly of Open Source Software for several years now and Flock has allowed me to give back to the community, even in a small way. I think my contribution to Flock has given me a better appreciation of
the complexity and time needed put out an application. And Flock has given me experience I hope will serve me well in my career.

4) Do you have any tips for someone looking to contribute to Flock or another open source project?

Don't be afraid to ask questions and admit you are not certain how to do something. The majority of people working on open source projects are willing to help. Also, no matter how small you think your contribution is, it is still likely valuable.

5) Another open source project that you really appreciate?

Well, I have to say I love what Mozilla has done for the browser world because Firefox has caused Microsoft to think about the user again, and of course security. Also, I really enjoy using Ubuntu. It is a great OS with a very helpful community.

Hi,
just downloaded the flock browser, seems to be coming along nicely. I am please to see that more people are getting into this style of programming and looking at the functionality of software applications rather than the money they can make.
