Hey Flockstars, please join me in giving a big warm welcome to our new Flock CEO Shawn Hardin. He started today and he's already in the office, pushing buttons and twisting dials. Here's a little from our press release.

Hardin was most recently Yahoo!'s Head of Youth, Health & Games. In this role he oversaw the strategic direction, product & programming and business operations for these key businesses. His complete portfolio collectively attracted 30 million unique users and over 2.3 billion minutes of consumer engagement each month.

Hardin has front-line expertise in technology-driven entrepreneurial ventures in addition to a business background with NBC and AOL. His creative and business experience spans Entertainment, Film, Television, Information Technologies, Mobile and Internet markets. He has been working at the intersection of media, technology, and business for over twelve years, including as a founding executive of NBC Television Network's Interactive Division, EVP & Group General Manager for NBCi, SVP for AOL Broadband and Head of Youth, Health & Games for the Yahoo! Media Group.

Flock Names Consumer Technology and Media Veteran as CEO

Our own Ian McKellar did some digging about Shawn and discovered that his father is Deep Throat from the X-Files and his sister is Jan from The Office (US version). This is how I would have introduced myself to him if we were on a sitcom:

Me: Hey, if I can do more pushups than you, will you introduce me to Steve Carell?

Shawn: Uh, nice to meet you, but I don't want to do a pushup competition...

Me: one...two....three....four....ugh....fiivvee.... *flop*

I am curious....Flock has a definite Yahoo supportive angle to it. That's fine, it's as good a starting point as any...but I hope someone can reassure me that it's not a bias that will hold. Google is a major competitor to Yahoo obviously, but I do hope FLock will gain support for things like picasaweb, or google reader eventually. I do use a lot of google services, and I am hoping to find them supported as Flock moves forward.

Welcome, Shawn.

I too am curious about the relationship between Flock and Yahoo!. Although I like Google and use some of their services and development APIs, I have been finding Yahoo! services to be equally functional but more visually appealling and better interactivity. Google is an 800-lb gorilla and quite honestly becoming Microsoft 2.0. I'm glad Flock is aligning with Yahoo!, but also agree that there should be an open playing field to leverage the latest technologies from a variety of providers. Just my 2cents. :0)

great addition!

Hi ansfrid,

We do have partnerships, but we're trying to keep the user free to use the services he/she likes. For example, we support Google's blog service blogger.com and you can switch to Google as your default search engine for the searchbox.

Support for new services (from Google or others) depend on several factors: the popularity of the service, the presence of an API, the time and the workforce we have...

Also note that Flock is extensible so anyone can develop an extension to support a new service.

Wow. Could this possibly be the same Shawn Hardin of '120-Volt Miracles' fame? What the hell happened to his hair? I remember when he had a ponytail. That mugshot looks like something that came from the police department. Did you fingerprint this Hardin character? Better, just to be safe. I know him from way back when. Oh, the stories I could tell.

I think the yahoo connection is a good thing. Google is really close with firefox and that could scare yahoo. So right now I see IE7 promoted on yahoo. But if yahoo is close with Flock, we might see it promoted on their site once Flock 1.0 is ready?
