Flock Blog

Here at Flock HQ we’ve been busy thinking, discussing, whiteboarding and now prototyping ideas for the next release of Flock, code-named “Danphe” (which, as we’ve learned, is a multicolored pheasant and the national bird of Nepal – other “D” bird names didn’t make the cut, but that’s another story).

We’re trying to get a good part of that thinking out onto wiki.flock.com in the next week, but I wanted to give you some highlights now (since much of what we are doing is driven from the great feedback we continue to get in our forums and mailing lists). Your continued feedback and ideas are welcome!

People

People are at the center of the next version of Flock. When you look at version 0.7 of Flock, you notice that you can have Photo Favorites (your favorite people with photo accounts) and you can subscribe to people’s blogs in the News feature.

But what if you have a friend (let’s call him Larry) in Photo Favorites who also has a blog you subscribe to? Presently, there is no link between those two in Flock. To close the loop on these loose ends, we’ve thought through the various scenarios and believe that we have a useful way to show you all of "Larry's" stuff in one place.

Bookmarks/Favorites

Bookmarks in Flock have some great additional features from other products, such as tags, being searchable in the search box, etc. But there are some areas of Flock which are missing the UI and organization that people are familiar with, such as nested folders, a bookmarks sidebar, etc. This will all be fixed in the upcoming release.

Search

Currently, Flock allows you to search your favorites and history, but we’ve had requests to expand that to your subscribed news feeds, and we think we can index a few other things as well (such as your people). In addition, we want to improve the performance and stability of the product and make the features easier to discover for new Flockers.

The new release is starting to take shape in the continuous build system, so if you’re brave, take a look at http://tinderbox.flock.com/builds/trunk and pull down a recent build (you can install it in a separate directory from the released version of Flock to be safe).

Again, thanks again for all of your support and feedback and we look forward to working with you to make the next release a success.

Just a thought on the People feature. I hope groups of People can be, well... grouped. :-)

Say I can group or organize information about all my diving buddies, then another group for the product development team in my office. It would also be great if a person could be associated with more than one group.

Glad to hear about the nested folders also.

Cheers!

P.S.
Any chance of using Google instead of Yahoo! when showing the top 4 search results? I think the results returned by Google are still better than Yahoo's.

Amen to the google replacing yahoo. Or the option of both. Or more search engines.

How about stronger support for Blogging intergrating HTML TIDY, HTML Editor throws up to many Spans while spell checking, also why did you guys remove The Blog Top bar, It was so awesome, i was disappointed with that. I can't access my previous posts any more using Flock.

Don't forget about native support for synchronizing news.

Dave Cardwell.

re: Google, not Yahoo -- I know the Yahoo! quick results are publicly accessible (just as Y!IQ uses it), but does Google even an open feature like this yet?

First let me assure you that Flock is great, and I blog early and often to make sure as many people know about it as possible. Then let me say, why reinvent the wheel? Shouldn't bookmarking just use a webservice like delicious? Shouldn't news/feeds by handled by newsgator or newsalloy? The photo top-bar uses Flickr (or Photobucket), so why should the other features be different? I think Flock will be most useful the more web 2.0 it is. I mean, able to integrate all the wonderful, free services from around the web that other people are developing. Let them make the best news-reader or bookmarking service, and we'll just use it.

Just be aware if you try the Danphe windows version, even if you install on a seperate directory or partition, when you choose to uninstall it will rip out parts of your original cardinal as well, as I have just unfortunately found out :-(

Yes, uninstalling sucked...

One feature I'd like to see in Flock is being able to apply tags to a blog post /before/ going to the publish page.

Quite often I'll change my mind and edit my blog post after going to the publish page, only to find that when I return to the publish page all my tags are lost. Dubbya Tee F, man?

Hi, I'm Turkish science communicator.rüya tabirleri I like very very much Nature Podcast.
Congratulations!

I play the game every day to find you. And I buy a lot of cheap talisman online gold to give you. I want to retain you but now I think it is a waste. But I think you are my love forever!

Same as Zara... uninstalling is a nightmare.

very nice blog Thanks.

this is awesome!

I think that public art operates under different constraints from art that is created in private and sold privately. It needs (or its corporate/government sponsors think they need) to measure up against a demanding yardstick of public accountability. Therefore the insistence by Mayor Mike that Christo & Jeanne-Claude financed The Gates completely on their own dime -- that it would cost the taxpayers NOTHING. Similarly, the ecological bill of this project must be shown to be zero.

Uninstalling was a pain in the butt...

k pain unvailable.

I thought the Blog Top bar was great and disappointed that it is removed. The uninstalling process was not fun!

We look forward to the success of the next version!
